Activity: Finding a Blog

Go to google.com/blogsearch and find a blog post that you like. Try to search for specific things to find recent posts… so instead of searching for “Carolina Basketball” maybe search for “Carolina Clemson” to find analysis of last night’s game. To find a more recent post click “last day” or “last week” on the left hand side of the page.

Look at a bunch of different posts and blogs and try to find one that you would consider returning to regularly. Once you have decided on a post, copy and paste the following questions into the comment window on this post and answer them with a sentence or two each:

Name:
Link to your blog post:

1.What did you search for to find this post?
2.What made you choose this post rather than others you looked at?
3.What kind of introduction does the post have? How does the writer try to hook his or her reader?
4.What do you think of the blog’s layout? Is it inviting or intimidating?
5.How does the blogger conceive of his or her audience? Is it for insiders or outsiders? What kinds of knowledge does the author assume of his or her reader? Are these assumptions true of you?

    1.googled "blog about healthy eating"
    2. the material on the blog was clearly laid out and easy to comprehend
    3. the blogger talks about a perfect brunch. the hook was a delicious picture of a omelet being cooked.
    4. the layout is very accessible and straightforward. there is the perfect amount of pictures and the links to the different parts of the website are easy to find. the lack of too many ads makes it inviting
    5. the blog is for both insiders and outsiders since it is not private. the blogger directs her blog to healthy eaters who love food, which fits who i am.

    http://blog.wildlife-pictures-online.com/photography/kruger-park-winter-photos/

    1. I searched for nature photography blogs, and searched Africa once I found the wildlife pictures online blog.
    2. I chose this one not only because I have a particular interest in Kruger national park (I worked there this summer) but also because the large attention grabbing photos that the post features.
    3. The intro just says "Kruger National Park Winter Photos", but the hook is the photographs, immediately drawing me in.
    4. The layout is simple, just post by post with pictures followed by commentary by the photographer. I like it because it is not intimidating, it just focuses on nature photography.
    5. The author of a blog like this assumes nothing of the reader. The beauty of photography (especially nature photography) is that everyone can admire and appreciate it. I do love nature photography, but I believe most people would enjoy browsing through this blog.

Link to your blog post: http://www.popmatters.com/pm/review/164640-kendrick-lamar-good-kid-m.a.a.d.-city/

1.What did you search for to find this post?
"Kendrick lamar good kid m.a.a.d city

2.What made you choose this post rather than others you looked at?
This one did a realy good job of describing how Kendrick's new album fit in with the history of Hip Hop.

3.What kind of introduction does the post have?
How does the writer try to hook his or her reader?
The introduction goes over the history of storytelling in rap, which gives people a better understanding of this particular album. This is particularly useful as good kid m.a.a.d city is arguably one of the best full fledged story albums in at least a few years.

4.What do you think of the blog’s layout? Is it inviting or intimidating?
It's pretty inviting, the text takes up most of the screen, although all of the ads on the sides do a frustratingly good job of drawing attention away from the post.

5.How does the blogger conceive of his or her audience? Is it for insiders or outsiders? What kinds of knowledge does the author assume of his or her reader? Are these assumptions true of you?
The writer assumes that people reading this post know a little about hip hop, but not really many specifics on early concept albums. The author does a good job of presenting descriptions without seeming to insinuate that the reader doesn't know a lot about hip hop.

    1. I searched for "backpacking" then I clicked on the first post on the blog website.
    2. Nothing special made me choose this post. It was just the first one and I didn't feel like searching through all of the posts yet. However, I choose the whole blog because it's something I'm interested in.
    3. The post seems like a conversation with the reader. it's very informal and jumps right back in from previous posts as if the writer never stopped talking. The writer is very causal and joking in the beginning and throughout the whole post.
    4. I think the blogs layout is very relaxed. it's not intimidating whatsoever. It's genuine.

    1. I searched "Indian Culture in America."
    2. I chose this post because right off the bat, the writer began with a personal account. I enjoy reading things that writers put themselves into and I think that blogs should always somehow incorporate the person who owns it.
    3. The introduction describes the person who is writing the blog. The writer hooks the reader by detailing every moment of the event that sparked this blog post.
    4. The blog's layout is inviting. It is split into sections that are small, but have a large impact. The blog post itself is an invitation into the somewhat private life of the blogger. Reading the first few sentences, the reader wants to know what happens next in this narrative.
    5. This blog was written for outsiders. The author conceives that his audience is American and knows all about the "American Dream", a goal that many people hope to achieve. The author also assumes the reader is open-minded. These assumptions are true of me.
